Menopause a new begining!

It’s the permanent end of menstruation, and signals the end of your child bearing years. It also causes annoying hot flashes and mood swings. Yet, with regular health checks and the right supplements, you can gift yourself a surge of good health!
WHAT IS MENOPAUSE?
Menopause is the natural point in your life when you have your last period. The word “menopause” has Greek origin and is a combination of the word “meno” which means month, and “pause” which means to end. It signals the end of your fertile phase (your ovaries gradually cease to function); you are said to go through menopause when your periods stop completely (wait for 12 months in a row aftr your last period to confirm this). But before your periods have completely stopped is a phase called menopausal transition or perimenopause. Often, the menopausal transition is confused with menopause, but this phase begins several years before your last period. At this time, you can technically still get pregnant, since your ovaries are working, and you continue to ovulate, albeit not as frequently as before. Once your periods have ended completely, you can say that you have gone “through menopause”.

WHY DOES IT OCCUR?
As you age, menopause is triggered by the shutting down of the ovaries, your body’s reproductive glands. Surgeries such as a hysterectomy and chemotherapy can bring on early menopause. Ovaries are the main source of the reproductive hormones oestrogen and progestin. Oestrogen regulates pregnancy, the monthly cycle, and maintains skin and bone health and the cardiovascular system. When oestrogen production goes down in menopause, there are changes in the skin’s texture, the uterus, heart and bone density. It’s a good idea to go in for regular check-ups post-menopause, to catch osteoporosos and cardiovascular problems early.

WHEN DOES IT OCCUR?
Worldwide, the average age for women having their last period is 51 years. Some women can experience it sooner and others later, some women may have their last period tin their late 30s while others might have to wait till they are in their 60s! Typically in Bangladeshi women, menopause takes place a little earlier, the average age ranging from 40-49 years.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Menopause isn’t one-size-fits-all event. It varies from women to woman. A third of women won’t even notice the transition, while another third will experience mild to moderate symptoms. The remainder may have symptoms that severely hamper their lives.
Since oestrogen plays a role in many bodily functions, the symptoms of the menopause transition are quite diverse. Here’s a list:
*Menstrual period changes
*Hot flashes
*Vaginal dryness
*Urinary problems
*Sleep disturbances
*Mood Changes
*A lowered libido

WHAT IS HAPPENING INSIDE YOUR BODY:
*Heart protecting oestrogen goes down
*Your bones lose calcium
*Your iron levels go up
*Your body fat increases and muscle mass decreases
